Text Neck Syndrome – Understanding Text Neck
I know you know that this little device has changed your life forever, including most importantly, how you communicate with the world. But did you also know it can cause irreparable harm and disability to you for years to come? Well, we're going to show you how and explain what something called text neck is all about.
Hi, I'm Tim Flory, NUCCA doctor with AtlasBrainSpine.com and you're probably wondering how something so small and harmless can hurt you and your body for years to come without even knowing it. Well, it is called text neck syndrome and it definitely can hurt you. Over the last 15 years, texting has become one of the most popular ways of communicating, but it also has led to the instability of millions of people's spines, plus it negatively affects your brain and your nerves. So how does text neck happen?
Your head weighs about 12 pounds like a bowling ball. And this is when it's in a normal position directly over the rest of your body. A research study in 2014 discovered that the further forward the head is angled, the more pressure builds effecting the joints, discs, muscles, and ligaments. When your neck gets to 45 degrees, your head is like 50 pounds on your neck. This is far too heavy to be sustainable.
When you do this over and over, day after day, looking down at your phone, you slowly weaken your neck. This is not unlike the process of erosion creating the Grand Canyon, and if left uncorrected, you'll have more than just a pain in your neck too. Once you develop anterior head syndrome, many people develop headaches, cervical disc problems, and even pinched nerves coming out of the neck.
Therefore, the question is, if I don't already have text neck, how do I prevent it from happening Living in today's Day and age? I realize it would be unreasonable to ask you to stop using modern communication devices like this one, but there are some things you can do right now to stop the process of text neck from causing more pain and even more degenerative conditions. First, hold your phone up just below eye level and look down with your eyes. Do not flex your neck.
Second, keep your Chin back. Don't Judge Your Chin forward. Also, keep your shoulders down. Sometimes we don't realize how much tension we're creating on accident and last but not least, don't spend hours on your phone. This is horrible for your brain and your spine, for so many different reasons. Simply put, our bodies were designed for movement not to be sedentary.
So all in all, obviously not all hope is lost. You can still keep a strong posture and a strong neck, but if you feel your neck to hurt or you're even having other symptoms like back pain, headaches, and dizziness, this is a sign of a more serious condition, developing potentially involving your atlas and should be looked at by a NUCCA practitioner to see just how much damage has been done. You can also do some stretching exercises in your neck like we've talked about in another video.
